But, surprisingly, finding the best flat iron doesn’t have to be a nightmare (yes, really). First, know that the more efficiently your straightener works, the better it is for the overall health of your hair, which meant it’s time to throw away your gunk-covered flat iron from high school. Second, it’s 2019, and straighteners have come a loooong way in the last decade, so even though, sure, there are certain flat irons that are better for certain hair types (more on that below), you can kinda pick and choose whichever straightener seems best, and you really can’t go wrong.
Hair straighteners come in a lot of different sizes, and that can make it more difficult to decide which one is right for you. By learning about the type of hair you have, the kind of style you want, and the amount of heat you need, you can also figure out what the best size iron for your hair is. It does make a difference for the sake of speed as well as precision. It sounds like a lot of work, but you can figure out what’s right for you by clicking here.
Sephora’s best-selling hair straightener and flat iron list is dominated by styling tools from big hitter GHD. The crème de la crème on the beauty retailer’s list is GHD’s Platinum+ Professional Performance 1” Styler. The flat iron operates at 365-degrees Fahrenheit, which the brand considers “the optimum styling temperature for even healthier hair,” has a 20-second heat-up time, and a heat-resistant plate guard to protect your furniture and other surfaces. While the price point is definitely on the higher side, GHD’s hair straightener uses predictive technology that adapts to your hair’s individual texture and needs, promising you a unique — and worth it — hair-styling experience.

Which is better titanium or ceramic hair straightener?

The ceramic plates are reasonably wide at 1in, precision-milled and ultra-smooth, with a glossy coating that sparkles in the light. There are no sharp edges, nooks or crannies in which rogue strands of hair can become snagged in use, and the rounded barrel edges make for a smooth styling action at whichever angle you hold the Platinum+, even right up close to the root.
Once you have purchased your new hair straightener and mastered the multitude of ways you can put it to good use, the only thing left to do is take care of it, so it lasts for years to come! Just like any luxury beauty tool, you will want to care for your hair straightener to extend its longevity and prevent corrosion (which can actually leak into your flowing locks…yuck!). Our top tips for caring for and cleaning your new hair straightener include:

This original hair hero uses ceramic heat technology to style at the optimum styling temperature, for perfect results every time. A rounded barrel and floating plates makes this styler glide easily through hair, creating beautiful styles. I am in love with this flat iron.  You cannot go wrong with this amazing smart syler.  With its predictive technology this iron predicts each strands  needs to ensure optimum temperature . The heat is monitored up to 250 timers per second across the plates and also recognizes the thickness of hair and speed to which you are passing through the section.  WHAT?! Crazy right? I promise you this is an Amazeballs flat iron and totally worth the hype.  Its not just another flat iron this flat iron is the ish!  With a unique wishbone hinge it ensures the plates are perfectly aligned while you straighten, curl, or wave your hair.  Each plate is precision milled allowing hair to pass through effortlessly.   My all time favorite feature like on all the new products is the auto shut off  after 30minutes of non use.  Because who needs to worry all day at work if you turned off your flat iron or not.   It is a more expensive flat iron but totally worth it.
Research Director Lori Segal also gave the iron a go. She's used GHD's original Platinum Styler, but found that it didn't smooth her hair to her liking. "It still left my naturally wavy hair a bit fluffy, even when straight," she says. But she felt as if this iteration of the iron gave her a look that is more her speed. "There was a clear difference in this one making my hair flatter and less puffy than the previous model. And the finish is less frizzy and dry." While she mentioned she feelt like she needed to add a smoothing serum to get her hair as sleek as she wanted it, she does appreciate the temperature-control technology. "I like that it still heats to a 'safe' temperature for my hair type without scorching it and that it heats up quickly and evenly."

Very helpful instructions. I was surprised for the first time when I heard the beep going off, just seconds after I’ve plugged it in. Second surprise hit me when it started gliding through my hair, no tugging or pulling whatsoever. It straightened my tight curled afro like it was nothing, and left me just staring at myself in the mirror with disbelief. The styler never does any damage by singing or burning my fragile locks (hurrrayy), and it takes me insanely short time to make whatever style I want. If you too want to add some variety to your hair, then this is definitely a tool for you

Reviewers with short hair love this mini straightener. “This flat iron is perfect for my pixie,” writes one, explaining, “I love how hot the iron gets and how skinny the actual plates are. I can even curl the really short hair around my ears and nape area. It was hard to find a flat iron with plates this size that wasn’t $150 or more, but this is it!” However, the miniature size is also appreciated by those with fine or thin hair. “I had no idea flat irons this narrow even existed. Total game changer,” says one commenter. “I have fine, thin hair, and a pixie cut. Even if I had longer hair again, I would only use this! Very well made, heats up quickly, and no snagging or pulling your hair out. You can get really close to your roots without burning yourself.”
We don't need to tell you that GHD's Platinum Styler flatiron is bae. It's already got two Best of Beauty awards to prove it. The wildly easy-to-use tool truly takes the guesswork out of straightening your hair. All it has is a single button which heats up the tool to 365 degrees and keeps it that way so your hair doesn't get too fried. But having an award-winning straighter wasn't enough for the folks at GHD. They just had to be extra — and thank goodness, because we're all poised to benefit from it with the brand's new release, the Platinum + Styler.
Ask any seasoned hair stylist for a flat iron recommendation, and you will hear the same brand time and time again: CHI. Known the world over as a leader in hair care and styling, CHI is your go-to name for salon results at home. While CHI offers a variety of designs (and fun colors!) to choose from, the brand’s G2 Ceramic and Titanium model is what caught our eye when researching the best hair straightener. This hair straightener is packed with high-tech features and an upgraded, ergonomic design for the shiniest and straightest ‘do you’ve ever seen!
Before placing your entire head under unnecessary heat conditions, try straightening a small section of your hair with what you believe is your ideal heat setting. Take notice of the way your hair reacts to this temperature, paying close attention to any fraying or singeing that may result. Smoking and that dreaded burnt hair smell are a sign that you may need to tone it down a bit to avoid permanent damage to your precious locks.

My eclipse died and I couldn't afford to replace them with the new platinum model, so went for the GHD V Styler, but they were horrendous and made no difference to my hair whatsoever. After reading reviews I thought I'd then try the IV Styler instead, now while a slight improvement on the V model, my hair was still left looking very big and frizzy. I've now reverted back to my really old emergency set of SHE's and can't believe how much better they are than GHD's, even the eclipse! If they ever need replacing, I know which brand I'll be opting for at half the price of GHD's!
The ceramic blue plates aren't just pretty; they push conditioners into the hair, quelling frizz 65 percent more efficiently than a traditional ceramic iron. Even experts were impressed. "[It] leaks heat-protective ingredients onto the hair at the exact point of contact, coating every strand during the straightening process," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson.

For undereye bags and inflammation, caffeine, peptides and hyaluronic acid can be soothing, Mattioli says. “Dark circles can be due to visible veins or actual discoloration common in darker skin tones,” she says. “Look for brightening ingredients like vitamin C, kojic acid and niacinamide.” Insider tip: Steer clear of strong retinols (which can sting and create redness) and fragrance, to avoid any eye irritation.

Thankfully, we’ve learned a lot about hair care and preserving your hair’s natural integrity while styling. However, this wasn’t always the case. If you ever had a perm done in the 80’s or teased your hair to holy heaven in the 90’s, chances are pretty good that your hair has endured a bit of damage. The same can be said if you color your hair on a regular basis or recently went from your natural brunette color to a bright platinum blonde. No matter how the damage was caused, there are certain features you will want to shop for when selecting the ideal hair straightener for your course hair type:
